The Intelligence Community Case Method Program

The Intelligence Community Case Method Program is based in the Center for the Study of Intelligence. In 1990, Program Director Thomas W. Shreeve established the program at the Central Intelligence Agency as a way of capturing the value of the Agency's experience and spreading that value through the organization. Based on his background as a student and staff officer at the Harvard Business School, he modeled the Program on the way graduate schools of business and public administration teach their students how to analyze challenging, ambiguous problems and make decisions to resolve them. Success in CIA classrooms led quickly to an increasing role for the case method throughout the US Intelligence Community.

Retired from the CIA in 1998, Mr. Shreeve is now engaged in private practice as a teacher, management consultant, and course developer through Thomas W. Shreeve & Associates, LLC.

Thomas W. Shreeve & Associates, a Limited Liability Company, provides case-based teaching services to a wide variety of clients from both the public and the private sectors. The company's principal officer, Thomas W. Shreeve, is Director of the US Intelligence Community Case Method Program. With nearly two decades of experience as a case-based teacher and case writer, Mr. Shreeve is widely regarded as the leading provider of case-based education and training services to the US Intelligence Community.

Drawing on material created for US government agencies and from leading graduate schools of business and public administration, the company provides four basic services:

Teaching seminars using existing cases and case studies

Creating new material for clients' special needs through research and writing

Consulting in the development of case-based courses of instruction

Instruction in the use of the case method as a teaching methodology

Located in McLean, Virginia, Thomas W. Shreeve & Associates leverages the experience of a number of instructors and research assistants, most of them fully cleared with a variety of US agencies, who are subcontracted on a periodic basis to provide case-based services.
